The smell of a flowering Bradford Pear tree reminds of the smell of
what is "sprayed" about on a porno movie set...if you know what I mean.
RE:on the set of a porno?? Have I seen some of your work? Was that
you who starred in the Pork Sword from Down Under? :-)
As I told SCM, these speakers are a bit of an experiment. I now
understand why some people who listen to a jazz and vocals prefer monitor speakers.
The Totem Rainmakers have more ambience and more soundstage depth than
my Vandy 3As. The tweeter is quite a bit brighter which tends to bring
out more detail, but can be fatiguing on some recordings. The midrange
also seems to be more detailed and does make female vocals a bit more
appealling. BUT, the Rainmakers lack impact and of course deep bass.
They have a wide ambient soundstage, but I cannot seem to get the
center fill quite right. The vocals are pulled to the left or right. But
I will continue to experiment with placement to see if I can get this
right. I definitely found the limit of the Rainmakers yesterday when I
cranked up some Metallica. My Vandys have a much more laid back upper
end with a little less ambience. But they soundstage correctly with
the proper center fill and a taller soundstage. And of course they
Rock and Roll just fine.
I guess my ideal speaker would be one that has a bit more detail like
that of a monitor type speaker, but still possess the ability to deliver
impact like a full range floorstander. These Totem speakers have really
opened my eyes and ears to consider some other monitors in the future.
I am going to hear a set of Aerial 3s on a system with a Vandersteen
subwoofer tomorrow evening. I am curious to see if the Aerial 3s can
deliver the impact I am looking in. We will see...
