I'm sure I've posted about this before, but I had a French girlfriend who was a gourmet chef (worked within the Relais & Chateaux group of hotels). She also came from a family which had a winery in the Bordeaux region.
I asked her about the way the French select a good wine, and, instead of going off for half an hour throwing around wine-related buzzwords she simply said that they basically try a wine, and if they find they like it they keep buying it. Simple as that.
That said, I'm sure she knew a hell of a lot more about wine and matching it up with the correct foods (it was her job to do so), but her feeling was that wine snobbery, as opposed to true appreciation, was mostly an English and American thing. I will say that because of her job she was on a couple of occasions able to smuggle out some very fine examples of the wrath of grapes: one a perfectly delicious Sautern (spelling?) and a red. The red was apparently several hundred dollars a bottle and I didn't recognize the label, but tasting it you just knew it was "right". My tongue suddenly felt alive with the flavour is the only way to describe it.
Cheers
