Your 'rant' reminded me of my childhood.I lost some of my hearing as a child growing up in Chicago. Our apartment didn't have air conditioning, and my brother and I shared a bedroom whose 2 windows opened up on a fire escape that was about 15 feet from the EL (elevated train). The trains ran 24/7 in those days, about 7 or 8 min apart until midnight. When it was really hot, we'd sleep on the fire escape cause there was a slight breeze, and after a while, we just didn't notice the trains anymore. Of course, the upside was that every time our mom yelled out the front window for us to come home, we ignored her for the first 2 or three times, and then explained that we just didn't hear her.
