The noise floor does not equate to resolution...... Dithered CDs have a noise floor between 15 and 16 bits, since the LSB is what gets triggered by the dither noise..... It would be difficult to dither the signal in order to accurately track the signal 24 dB below the LSB threshold. I'm not saying it's impossible, but highly unlikely.

Note that high-rez also has "dither" from ambient noise. The problem with high-rez I think is due to a lot more RFI being generated. I personally prefer Redbook CD over high-rez because I think high-rez is unlistenable for extended periods of time.

I think DSD is a viable system conceptually..... The bit breakdown is not easily understood, and it's easy to make presumptions that may or may not be accurate. I do think, however, that anything complicated in digital signal handling is detrimental to quality playback, regardless of format.
