Gentlemen:
I have been reading your post about the never ending digital
controversy. Let me offer a few points:
1. 16/44.1 Redbook CD playback can be made to sound quite good,
period. I have been greatly impressed by the best CDs I have.
2. If ALL redbook CDs were recorded and processed to the levels of
my best disks, I would be in audiophile heaven!
3. The biggest mistakes with digital recording and CD sound today
lies in the improper choice and use of available equipment,
techniques, and processing all the way from the microphone to
the pressed CD.
4. If only all musicians, recording teams, producers, mastering
engineers, and disk manufacturers understood the above points
(especially #3)
One of the biggest sorrows in audio is the failure to attempt to
reproduce live music, rather that attend to slop, carelessness,
and biases that do not serve accurate music reproduction. There
have been so many great voices and performers passing through
the history of music that we will never hear properly due to
the mental problems the industry has in capturing music.
