The pentode is not all that important, it just needs to supply current. That is why the transistor sounds about the same. Alan piched through a bunch of tubes befor he landed on the 6AC7. While it can only supply about 10mA, it has a sky high plate resistance of 1,000,000 and a mu of 9,000. I would only change the tube if you needed more than 10 mA.For example, while the EL84 has a current capability of 48mA, it has a plate resistance of 135,000 and a mu of 418. A 6SJ7 can't pump enough juice at only 3mA.
