I have a v35 as well. The heat you are feeling is normal for this amp. The amp is pulling about the maximum heater current out of the transformer and that can cause it to get warm. As this is basically a modified Dynaco ST-70 amp, I would not worry about reliability. These amps run forever and the transformer in the v35 kit is a very high quality item.

I live in a cold climate and the heat from tube amps helps keep my room warm. Also, If you do not put your hand on the transformer, you will not know it is warm. You don't stick your fingers in a light socket to see if there is electricity present. Just kidding. enjoy.
