It can be a little un-nerving to flip the switch and sit there for half a minute waiting for the rectifier to fire up...all the time keeping an eye out for a puff of smoke!
But you got a variac, so you should rest easy.

Sometimes when the rectifier tubes are brand new it may take them 10-20 seconds to come to life.It can be a little un-nerving to flip the switch and sit there for half a minute waiting for the rectifier to fire up...all the time keeping an eye out for a puff of smoke!
