In Reply to: what's another tube I can use other than GZ37 in the Moondogs? posted by Walter on September 23, 2000 at 02:58:51:
GZ37 is so good and so plentiful to the point where tube-rolling may not mean much afterall.Don't forget that GZ37/CV378 falls under the usual Mullard line of low voltage drop, high performance indirectly heated full-wave rectifiers (GZ34, GZ33, etc.)that none of the US counterparts can rival. Sure you can drop in something like a 5U4GB, 5V4, etc. but DO REMEMBER: these US tubes are directly heated, meaning that not only you have more voltage drop but also lacking the "slow warmup" which may cause damage to your system. Furthermore, higher voltage drop meaning that you probably alter all other tube's operating characteristics down the chain. This is the sonic change you get as a result.
Again I'm just throwing in my $0.02. Plse do it with your own discretion and don't tell anyone else.
Have fun!
