Hi RonThe amp was having a problem with the fuse blowing s son as it was powered on, so I got my friend who had helped to assemble it, check it thoroughly. He finally diagnosed the mains tranformer to be having a leakage of current, and so we disconnected it and opened it out. Visually there appear to be some black areas on the underside, and there is also a faint burnt smell. My friend's assessment is that the problem is likely to have arisen because I have wired my whole house with a back up power supply, for our fairly frequent blackouts, and the frequency of the AC power that was coming into the transformer may have damaged it. am not a tech guy, so I dont know if this is true or false.
I will try to get it rewound here, since it is is too heavy a piece to get shipped from an overseas vendor very easily. Otherwise I have to bring it with me when I visit the US next-having just come there last month, I am unsure about my next visit there!
I understand that the locally drawn copper wire here is not as uniform as what you get in the US, so the transformers here could be larger, and so may not be as easy to mount as the original one. If there is no technical problem, and performance will not suffer I could also look at a locally available toroidal transformer-like I see some on other valve amps like Transcendant or Velleman..
Thanks for any advice.
