Hi Ron and Mike:First Mike. You lucky dog
. Four globe 45's? One of the best sounding SE amps I have ever heard used the globe 45 tube. If yours are of the same manufacture (at least in pairs, let's say) and test out good... well, I would be very tempted to put them to good use. Hi Ron. As far as vintage tubes go I have found the 45 tube to be easier to find than 2A3's. And (unless the prices have shot up a lot recently) I have found many 45's in the twenty to forty dollar range... though the globes might command more bucks.
In very general terms the 45 and the 2A3 tubes do have differing sound characteristics. My sense is that the 2A3 has a bit more body and color and is a bit warmer sounding tube. Whereas, the 45 excels in detail retrieval, sounds a bit faster, and is (for lack of a better word) a touch more see-through.
Of course everyone's mileage will vary depending on circuitry, sonic preferences and the like.
best of,
MSL
