Hello,I have a Phono II (higher gain) version with 6DJ8s and 12AX7s. I have been very happy with this pre preamp. Ron's solid state amp is probably a bit quieter, but if you are planning on using a moving magnet the noise levels should not be noticable.
The unit itself does not have much of a "sound". It is very neutral and not at all "tubey" sounding.
