Yes, they were actually designed by the same designer of the L100.
CRS, forget his name, but Pioneer hired him away from JBL. He intended the HPM-100 (in particular) to be a "super L100." In that, he succeeded in spades.
I would say all of the HPM models are stellar performers. The HPM-100 and its successor the HPM-900 (not to mention the 15-inch models!) have superb sound and sound great even today. Yes, I have a pair of HPM-900, and would certainly like to have another pair!
