I always over insure. Your case sadly demonstrates the need to do this. To them it's just a cardboard box.
I was warned (by the place where I ship all my gear from) NOT to ship any audio gear from Thanksgiving to after New Years Day. The likelyhood for damage goes way during this time frame.
