Finally, someone who agrees with my accessment of the Dynas. Your notion of why certain speakers may make the Dynas hard on the nerves, seems to make sense.
I believe that my LK-72B, is the assemble-it-yourself version, of the 299D. Wonderful, easy-on-the-ears amps, with strong bass, and great phono pre-amps- especially after a little creative re-capping. But, I feel that my Fisher X-202-B, just plain sounds better. It will remain, as my primary amp, and eventually get new caps, and deeper bass.
Thank goodness for the high prices that EBay fetches for nice Scotts, and Dynas. They go on the auction block, on January 2nd, or so.
