Quite warm after hours of use

The casing didn't reflect the genuine temperature within the core, most likely not more than 90 degrees C, depending on type of insulation. The most scientific way is to measure the resistance of winding when transformer cold/warm and some web site has formula for evaluation the temperature rise. Better still, have an ac input voltage/current measurement and you know what you're looking at. Leaky components would draw more current from this "fragile" transformer, causing it hot.
