On most all vintage gear the signal return/ground is attached to the chassis. Many of us have installed a three wire power cord. In that case signal ground and electrical ground are the same. In short you wouldn't even need the ground wire in an interconnect for things to work.
Now a two wire power cord and/or double insulated stuff makes it harder to say just what is going on.
Still I'd feel better having the ground unbroken and doing everything with the hot wire only.
