Thanks for all the suggestions. Many more that I could have thought up.
After some more looking, I settled on a Parasound P/FET 900 MK II that was going off auction at EBay. According to specs I found online, it's only 2.5 inches tall, so it should fill the bill.
Kind of a poor relation of the JC-2.
