At that time, certain critical tube types -- Telefunken 12AX7s for example -- had gone out of production, as were high voltage electrolytic capacitors, which, unlike tubes, had a limited shelf life before deforming.
These problems were were not necessarily immediate for all customers, given the reliablity of Mac gear, but they were real -- not just a sales pitch. I knew Dave O'Brien, who conducted the Mac clinics. He was an honest man.
My Mac gear was about 25 years old, there was quite a bit of it, and there were no indications that there would be a tube revival.
