The Model R does need stands, should be about 18 inches off the floor and tilted slightly back. The R and RII use the KEF "horsetrack" oval woofer.
I haven't played much vocal stuff on the Frieds yet, so I'm not sure they're as accurate as the Maggies.
I found an old Stereophile review of the R/4, it's a totally different speaker though also transmission line like the R. The R/4 doesn't use any of the same drivers as the R and RII.
