RE: The JBL 36s cleaned up rather nice.

I had forgotten, I used to encounter a surprising number of these while in college in the early 80's. Guys would buy them dirt cheap, liked them because they could play them LOUD on the Marantz/ Kenwood/ Pioneer low power receivers.

We called them Harvey Wallbangers. Because they made your head hurt, just like the drink.

Get a quality 1" driver on a decent horn (I like tractrix) from 800 up to the bullet. Maybe 1k or 1.2k but the 15 gets awfully beamy. Just stack it on top of the cab. Should sound a LOT better, tho a little bass shy.

A slot is usually better than a bullet in a home environment, if you want to go that far experimenting. You might be surprised, a JBL horn 3-way can be awfully difficult to beat without spend a ton of money
