I disconnected one side of the y that goes to the sub. The sub still appears to be working the same tho I admit I haven't found a movie with strong sub-frequency directionality, not that one even exists at sub-level frequencies.
The stereo speakers sound exactly the same whether the sub is disconnected from one side or not or whether the sub is on or off. Since that is true I just left the sub connected on one side only.
I've seen RCA plugs for audio out on new equipment where the red terminal is labeled L+R for mono and the white is just labeled R for stereo. Given all I have on the TV is a mini plug with no label whatsoever its tough to know exactly what is going on.
This is an interesting problem to get a line-level sub signal to a self-powered sub from any device that does not have a separate sub output while still retaining full stereo sound to the right and left speakers.
