RE: ADS L500 Series

Looking at the literature I have:

ADS 500 (circa 1976)

45-20000 hz +/-3db

4ohm

Efficency, 91db

40 watts
use 15-60 watt amp

Xover 1500hz 12db/octave

25 lbs

20"h X 11 1/2"w X 9 3/4"d
--------------------------

L520 (circa 1980)

35-20000 hz +/- 3db
25-22000 hz +/- 5db

6 ohm 4 ohms minimum

Efficency 92db

50 watts
use 15-100 watt amp

xover 1500hz 12db/octave

30 lbs.

21 5/8" h X 12 1/4"w X 10 1/2"d
---------------------------------

The L 570 is listed in the 1986 price list ($430 black, $460 Walnut) but I don't know the specs offhand. Of course, with each new generation, ADS claimed improvements, especially in the drivers. I have had all of these, and I think the L570 cabinets, while nice were not as heavy as or substantial feeling as the L520. Maybe my memory is faulty. I don't have the L520's any more, and I did have both black and walnut L570's, and I definitely sold the black ones, and I thought I still had the walnut pair but I can't find them anywhere in the house. Maybe I sold them? I still do have a pair of 500's. And I also have a pair of L1's which are sort of an odd speaker being that they seem to be L520 drivers in a L570 style beveled cabinet. Possibly dating from around 1984, I haven't seen very much about them online other than people say they are rare (?) [There is actually a pair of L1's on eBay right now, the seller claims the tweeters are both not working. I wonder if the seller checked the fuses?]

Finally, there is a newer version of the 8" woofer two-way speaker family, which is the L8e. They sound ok, but the cabinets are definitely lighter than the earlier models with vinyl not wood veneer. And the L8e have a plastic dome tweeter and not the 'sticky' fabric dome like the earlier ADS. I had a pair of those but prefer the smaller L7e.

Good luck,
