Classic gear from yesteryear; vintage audio standing the test of time.

Another possibility ...

I have a pair of Fostex RM 780 that sound very good. I am not trying to sell them, but I think the are readily available, being popular in pro circles. They also don't seem to go for much. The sound is quite nice and it is also a good looking speaker. The tweeter has an L-pad and there is a 2 pi to 4pi switch for working in cramped environments. It is coax, so it is great for near-field listening. Since they are cheap, it won't be a big deal if you don't like them, but I think you will.

The only modern speakers I can think of that fit the bill are Sequerra Met-7 (http://www.sequerra.com/electronics/data/met7.html). When I heard the when they were sold under the name Pyramid, in the 80's, they sounded very good on rock and were considered a budget high end speaker. Of course now they are not cheap, but they do appear to be built quite well in their current iteration.
