That's a surprise to me, but the one I heard were probably getting long in the tooth, and they were not modified. The stereo 120 that I have always seen it paired with was probably a major contributor to the "solid-scrape" sound.

I have never heard Tone Tubby speakers in a stereo, but will if I get a chance. It seems like quite a few people like them.
