Almost all vintage loudspeakers were made from particle board. Used right, it is great material for loudspeakers, as it is 1.7X as dense as plywood. For home loudspeakers that stay put, it works great. Not so for bands constantly moving them around, where plywood is the choice with better tensile strength. HD particle board is my choice for cabinets, but I am using more MDF these days, since getting HD particle board is getting harder. Plywood has to be braced much more to get it non-resonant.
