walnut veneer cleaning

The walnut veneer on these speakers is very nice. The trim on the grills appears to be solid walnut. I cleaned the surfaces carefully with some Murphy's Oil Soap in warm water, blotted them dry, waited overnight for complete dryness. Then I used some Scott's Liquid Gold (pourable, not aerosol) on them. They look fantastic!

The original finish was probably an oiled wood (tung oil?) with a not at all glossy appearance. The wood looked a little "dry". Doing one perfectly horizontal surface at a time, I dribbled on the Liquid Gold, spread it around with my fingers, leaving it looking very wet. A few places absorbed the initial application pretty fast, so I dribbled a little more on. I didn't wipe off the excess, left it on over night. The next morning the finish was matte oiled wood, but so much richer looking.
