Well, this idiot can tell you the answer!
Despite repeated warnings to myself to be careful and "stay away from the dial string", "stay away from the dial string", "stay away from the dial string", one tiny tiny instant of stupidity while unsoldering a volume control and puff.
Of course it was only my crummy old McIntosh MX-110, nothing I care about (NOT).
Yes, it's recoverable and I managed to tape the string in place to preserve the stringing pattern but man why oh why didn't I just clip out the old control instead of trying to preserve that last 1/4" of the wires on the control?
I'm sure none of you have stories like this! :)
