AudioSoul, I saw a video someone sent on the making of the McIntosh 275 tube amp. Part of the process of transformer construction showed dipping the interior transformer,not the housing or bell,into a black,tar looking goop in the construction of the tranny. Maybe a shorted or over heated transformer could be the culprit. You can laugh but I saw it on the video....Mark Korda.
