You reminded me of my friend Murray Zeligman who did something similar with the Stereo 70 chassis and transformers in the 80s. He used tubes like 6SN7s and 6SL7s in a push/pull front end with 2A3s for out puts and managed to get 18 watts/channel(no NFB loop by the way).
