The ZVN-0545 needs to be in there if you want to correctly drive a SS sub because it has a much lower impedance and a 12AX7 by itself with a .15 cap in the output simply won't effectively drive a 10k impedance load.The ZVN-0545 does not have any ill effect on the sonics and it is much more capable than the 12AX7 by itself because it is able to decouple the 12AX7 from the low impedance load.
