I have yet to hear a vintage Yamaha preamp that did not sound good, but I am particularly partial to C-2x, which I own. Other good ones IMO are:

David Hafler Model 110
Preamp section of a NAD 3020
Sony TA-2000F
Accphase -anything!
Adcom GFP-565
Niko Beta-20
