The laser diode in a typical CD player operates in the infrared region so, unless you're one of those Predator guys from outer space, you can't see it. As the other posters have suggested, a cleaning of the CD lens should be the first step. I use a Magic CD disc for this which has 2 brushes on the disc which you put some cleaner fluid on, but I ran outa the stuff and use Invisible Glass cleaner now. The book Compact Disc Player Maintenance and Repair by McComb and Cook should be available inexpensively used, if you want to get into it more deeply like a DIY laser light sensor.
