...I struck out on almost every house call.Since the stuff I collect is pretty old, I'm often dealing with older folks. I once shared my lack of success with an antique dealer friend of mine who asked how I went about things during these house calls. I told him I would show up, be pleasant, chat a bit and then ask to see the stuff.
WRONG !
My friend told me that with older folks you never ask to see the stuff. You sit and you listen to their stories about the weather, their dog, their ailments, how they acquired the stuff and whatever else they feel like telling you. You are the highlight of their day and they are in no hurry to rush you out the door. Be prepared to have a few cups of coffee and some cookies.
I was told to wait for them to say "...so, want to see the stuff ?"
Works like charm. Now, instead of leaving empty handed after 15 minutes, I often leave with all sorts of stuff ...sometimes several hours later.
Time well spent if you are sincere and like meeting some interesting characters ...who will then refer you to other characters. Even if I come away empty handed, I've made a new friend and heard some great stories.
