In Reply to: Is Soundsmith pretty much it now for a new B&O cart? posted by Awe-d-o-file on February 12, 2015 at 14:42:54:
Used a Soundsmith SMMC4 for several years in a Beogram TX2. Excellent sound but the bonded elliptical stylus gets tizzy on a lot of my favorite records. I paid $150.00 for the cartridge new, it's now $250.00.
I had the original non-functioning MMC4 cart sitting around all these years, so I sent it to Axel Schurholz in Germany for a rebuild--new aluminum cantilever and Shibata stylus. (Note: Soundsmith no longer rebuilds MMC-series carts).
The cost of the rebuild was about $200 USD, shipping to and from Germany was another twenty bucks.
IMO, this is the way to go. You'd need to spend nearly $600.00 to get a Soundsmith cartridge with a line contact stylus. I prefer the sound of the B&O cartridge as well though this is subjective.
