RE:Actually very little has changed

By and large PCM still rules as it has since the beginning. DSD is now in the picture. It is basically the old SCAD standard. DVD audio is basically dead.

There are some important differences in how things differ between an older stand alone CD player and a computer with USB interface. You will have to do the reasearch on your own. IMHO it makes more sense to go USB these days.

So many things are now done in software Therefore I wouldn't be so concerned about a DAC bought today being obsolete if a new standard comes along.
