How does this Aiwa LX-110 sound so GOOD?

So, in the $15 Goodwill score thread, you'll see I found an AIWA midi compo system at Goodwill. So, the turntable needed two new belts, but now it's working great.

What I can't get over is just *how* good this turntable sounds. For starters, it's linear tracking, so inner groove distortion is mostly dealt with by that alone. But what's so remarkable is that it has some no-name factory cartridge, I am thinking probably OEM by Audio Technica, and it sounds fantastic! So much so that I am completely re-thinking my current default setup.

Just to share here with my friends how good this thing really is, and perhaps quell some of the disbelief, I digitized a few tracks. The signal path was nothing special, REC OUT from the AIWA preamp straight into a Zoom HD4 SD card recorder. From there, to dropbox. To keep things simple, I just used 44.1K 16bit. For those of you listening with sound cards, beware that your card will-resample to whatever rate you have set as your default, and that will completely make these audio files suck. If you want, burn to a disc and try them through your rig. You won't be disappointed.

I've included two tracks from a Joan Armatrading album, one is the outer track, the other is the inner. Also, I've put the two inner tracks from a Fleetwood Mac album.

This thing is spanking my current turntable, even through a rather noisy preamp.

And just in case you want to hear what the two inner tracks of Dire Straits' B side on Brothers in Arms sounds like, from a digital master to an LP and back to digital again, here's this:

What is going on here? Why is this one of the best sounding turntables I've heard in recent memory, even through all that sand state preamp with too many EQ points and white noise, etc?

Please let me know what you think, and beware the PC sound card for demoing these files!
