I had a Counterpoint SA-3.1 that was a 6dj8/6922 based preamp with a really nice phone stage. I believe I paid around $425.

The counterpoint SA-5.1 is a significant step up as it has five tubes as opposed to three. I have heard this pre on several occasions and it never failed to impress. I think $800 dollars is doable for the 5.1 though I haven't checked used prices in awhile.
