Lot of questions about what makes the Sherwood S5000 special as opposed to other integrated amps.

There are a few reasons why the Sherwood 7189/EL84 integrated amps are so good IMHO.One is,they use ultra linear output transformers with very good transfer characteristics..When put 1khz and 10khz square wave thru the output transformers, they look exceptionally good.Next, these particular S-5000s use a five tube preamp which is as many or more tubes as you found in many stand alone preamps of the day.You then have very well laid out chassis with good metal content for shielding and lastly, the 7199 driver tube which is perfect for driving pair of 7189s or 6BQ5s.Couple that with a good rebuild with extra capacitance and selected coupling caps, that equates to a very powerful statement of an integrated amp.
