In my experience listening and building amplifiers - for a PP, UL amp - the heart of the matter is the Output Transformer.
As good as the McIntosh Transformers are, the Marantz are that much better.
The winding of an output transformer is equal parts Art & science.
and if you are going to use feedback - how that winding gets inserted - is not a trivial matter.
At one point (some 20+ years ago) I was involved in manufacturing PP tube amps 100w/ch stereo - we wound them from the bobbin up- stacked the lams and finished them - then matched the -3dB down point for each pair / amp.
you might be surprised in the variability that those units had at gross mfg-
what ended up in the amps were the cream - and it was worth every once of effort.
There are a few mfgs that have come close - but the output transformers of the 8b are among the rarefied few that are excellent - IMHO
