It seems that once they started paralleling output transistors, the sound quality fell off. Bob Carver made some comments to that effect back in the Phase Linear 700 days. At least in receivers and integrated amps, the higher powered models always added a bunch of extra controls and gadgetry, and I suspect that caused more problems than it solved. I always preferred the KISS method (Keep It Simple, Stupid).
