RE: What were your big leaps in audio

I think the one of the biggest leaps was buying a Linn LP12 with a Grace 707 at a thrift store. After years of messing with moving coil cartridges, I put a Shure M97xe as a stopgap measure, until I could get a "better sounding" moving coil cartridge. I discovered that I preferred the sound of the Shure. I particularly liked that it would track anything with ease that I threw at it. The sound got even better when bought my Yamaha C-2x preamp, and was able to load it properly on the fly.

My other big revelation was when I picked up a pair of Spendor BC-1s. I got the very cheap ($100), but had to pull them apart before I could hear them. The binding posts were broken. Wen I saw the thin cabinets with the screwed on front and back baffle, and the drivers mounted on the back of the baffle, I thought that these things could not possible sound good. They were primitive! I installed new binding post and I could not believe how good it sounded.

In both cases I learned to judge by sound, not technology.

Dave
