A lot of DVD players do a great job on CD's. If you insist on a native mode CD player, I've had great luck with used Rotel CD decks. I currently have a Rotel RCD-971, and a Rotel RCD-955AX. The 971 doesn't care; but the 955 is very fussy about the capacitance of the interconnects. I use 12" interconnects made by cutting down older Radio Shack "Gold" cables, and soldering on some new plugs. Standard 3' or 1 meter cables make it sound bright and edgy.
