My own experience with vintage gear is that it's not more "forgiving" than the rest, and benefits from good cables as much as new gear. All my gear dates from the seventies (with the notable exception of the digital sources of course) and I use VanDenhul "The Integration" interconnects and cheaper QED "Qudos" speaker cable. The difference they made is very sensible even to non-audiophile ears. I can understand one doesn't want to spend money on cables if the "vintage system" is nothing but a fun project for the garage or a second system, but if it's your main system, it would be stupid not to hear your electroncs at their best... just my two cents, again.
