I agree with you that it all depends on the speakers you have. The 12 watt Knight tube receiver would be plenty for my needs.
I'd be more concerned about the age of the unit, requiring it to have an entire recapping, as you said. It doesn't sound like the original poster is up to that task by himself at this point. It could get expensive to have someone else do it.
