That's a coincidence, I just had the same problem with a BIC 980. The platter wouldn't turn at all and I couldn't lift it up, either. Apparently, whatever lubricant they used on these things gums up with age. When I gently but firmly, with two hands, got the platter to turn I was able to work it off the table. Now it spins fine.
