RE: You bring up a very interesting point

The end goal should be listening to music. In a sense the system (however much you may love it) is a tool or even an appliance to reproduce music. In a well integrated system, you should be hearing back through to the original performance without the hardware getting in the way. It sounds like Michael Samra has been able to do that with the system you heard.

I feel that too often, serious enthusiasts tend to follow what I call the "audiophile checklist" approach. Broad soundstage? check; frequency response from DC to the blue spectrum of light? check; depth? check; and so on. You check all the boxes; but still, the result is not the holistic approach that is needed. And simply throwing money at it isn't the answer. Some rather humble systems can do it.
