I tried replacing the battery in my Dad's 30 year old Air Force knockoff watch and it would not work. So, I took it to the jeweler and he told me the mechanism was toast and it wasn't worth repairing it. At least he didn't charge me for the "death pronouncement"...
Well, I was about to put it back in my dresser (sentimental,I know) when I thought of Deoxit (I use Tronic cleen plus lube). I soaked it and let it sit for 30 minutes, put in the battery, and, Viola, it is keeping perfect time an hour later.
