Aside from lower audible hum, both types exhibit vastly lower stray magnetic fields - exactly what the VPI Brick serves to absorb.
Toroidal advantages
Virtually all high performance components today use these types because of lower noise and inherently less interference with surrounding circuitry. The only exceptions are cases like large, high voltage trannies used in tube power amps.
Audio Research, for example, starting using them as early as 1985.
