Depending on the volume of what we are listening to we are more of less sensitive to certain frequencies. Our hearing is an interesting subject and a loudness switch is of little use unless it tracks it frequency volume boost depending on the setting of the volume knob. Or, in the case of some Yamaha and other gear, the loudness control is another volume knob that applies the boost of the frequencies depending on the amount the loudness knob is advanced.
